Hotel Bahia Palace, Azores

Location: Lisbon and Azores (Sao Miguel Island), Portugal

Date:15th to 20th September 2000

Lisbon Session

The first session was organized in the framework of the XXVII General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission, which took place during September 10 - 15, 2000, in Lisbon.

Our Lisbon session was held on 15 September, from 9am to 4pm, as the Subcommission Symposium

SSA-1: Advances in modern volcano seismology

Conveners:
Dr. Juergen Neuberg
Dr. Roberto Carniel

in which we presented, together with original and new material, also the results and initiatives of our group from the last few years in a series of review talks. Please refer to the ESC Assembly website for further information: http://www.igidl.ul.pt/esc2000/

Here you can find a spreadsheet in XLS format, containing the complete list of participants to the Lisbon General Assembly (i.e., not only the ones participating in our session).

Workshop Title

"From seismograms to magma: What do seismograms actually tell us about a volcano?"

Participants, Programme and Abstracts

A full list of the participants in both sessions.

The program for the Sao Miguel Session can be found here.

Abstracts for the Sao Miguel session are here.

The program and the abstracts of the Lisbon session were published in the paper Proceedings of the ESC General Assembly.

With respect to the official printed program, we had a couple of modifications:

- the paper by Lombardo et al. was moved to the Sao Miguel session (see below).
- the paper by Del Pezzo et al. was cancelled.

Accommodation and Location

On 16 September, we moved to the island of Sao Miguel, in the Azores archipelago, for the rest of our workshop. As usual for our meetings, we stayed all together at the same hotel, which in this case was:

Hotel Bahia Palace
Água d'Alto - 9680 Vila Franca do Campo  (County: Vila Franca do Campo, District: Ponta Delgada),
on the coastal road between Ponta Delgada (at 20 minutes drive distance) and Furnas, on the southern slope of Fogo Volcano, on the island of Sao Miguel. clicking here and also here.

Conference Fee As in all previous editions, NO FEE was required to participate. The costs were therefore limited to travel, food and lodging. This made possible the participation of students and young researchers as well. In this edition actually a small FEE was introduced: every participant had to bring a bottle of local wine from his/her own country. This allowed us to organize the first geophysical wine tasting session...

Excursions and Field Trips

We meet at volcanoes in order to visit them! The colleagues of Azores University Centre of Volcanology organized several fieldexcursions. We managed to visit the three main volcanic complexes of the island; Fogo, Sede Cidades and Furnas.

Sao Miguel group photo

You can have a look at these wonderful green volcanoes on the website Stromboli On Line. During one of the field trips, a group photo was shot, that you can see above, courtesy of the author, Marco Fulle.
