ESC Working Group

Seismic Phenomena Associated with Volcanic Activity

organized a specialists workshop on:

Bringing geophysical volcano monitoring techniques to an operational level

Eruption during breakfast (bottles are from previous night!), Lokon volcano from Tomohon , North Sulawesi, Indonesia

September 8th - 14th, 2013

Convenors:

Surono, Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Geological Agency, Bandung, Indonesia

Jurgen Neuberg, University of Leeds, UK

Roberto Carniel, University of Udine, Italy

This workshop addressed geophysical forecasting methods in all major volcanic monitoring disciplines such as seismicity, ground deformation and gas emission. The emphasis was on assessing these methods regarding their applicability on an operational level as found in a volcano observatory or a similar institution charged with giving guidance and advice to decision makers at short- and mid-term time scales. The number of participants was intentionally limited in order to focus on informal presentations with plenty of time for discussion, rather than 15 minute conference contributions.

The Jhoanie Hotel in Tomohon was our base, easily accessed from Manado, Sulawesi.

Local logistics was efficiently handled by Sofie Yusmira Oktane (Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Geological Agency, Bandung, Indonesia)

Bruno Martinelli Travel  Grant

The Bruno Martinelli Fund was founded in 2001 to continue the support of scientific and personal exchange which Bruno encouraged. It is used for international meeting/workshop travel grants to young researchers or graduate students from Latin American and Caribbean countries. Unfortunately this year no young researcher could use the grants, although one was awarded.

Language and Conference Fee

The official language of the workshop was English. As usual there was no registration fee except participants brought a bottle of wine and/or typical sweet of their own country, as it has become tradition for this annual meeting.

Field excursion

Field Excursion was guided by John Pallister on 11 September. Field Guide can be found here
