Workshop Title

IN MEMORY of BRUNO

This was the first workshop after the death of our friend Bruno Martinelli, former Secretary of our Working Group, in December 2000. We will always remember Bruno's contribution to our chosen task: Understanding how volcanoes work. Many times he brought our discussions back to the starting point: We must view volcanoes as systems and we need to create physical models to shed further light on processes governing their activity.

Moreover, we recall Bruno's "other" contribution to volcanology and our group. In the past 15 years, he spent much of his time in Latin America, working with and advising earth scientists, but particularly those studying volcanoes. He saw their difficulties in meeting with other scientists to network and learn. He sent many "young" Latin American researchers to our meetings, often paying their travel expenses from his own pocket.

At the AGU, a fund has been created in memory of Bruno Martinelli to continue his support for Latin American researchers and facilitate their contact with other volcanologists at meetings outside of Latin America. We encourage you to donate to the Bruno Martinelli Fund. You can make your donation while subscribing or renewing your membership to AGU or you can contact Peggy Hellweg (email: geo_enterprise@compuserve.com) or Marta Calvache (email: mcalvache@ingeomin.gov.co) for more information.

Accommodation and Location

After the "special" edition of 2000, held partially in Lisbon in the framework of the XXVII General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission, and partially in Sao Miguel, Acores (more information can be found here), we returned to a more conventional all-in-one-place workshop.

We all stayed at:
