The School of Earth and Environment has one of the largest research clusters of
Earth, environmental and social scientists in the UK and internationally. Our research
mission is to combine world-class Earth and environmental sciences with environmental
social sciences in both fundamental and applied research.
The University of Leeds is one of the UK's leading research universities and, in the recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008), 70% of the
School of Earth and Environment's research was judged to be
internationally outstanding/excellent placing us in the top 10 in the
country in this category. A high proportion of our staff was submitted
for this RAE and, in terms of volume, this means that for our research
area our School has the 2nd highest number of internationally excellent
researchers in the UK.
Each year we recruit around 40 highly motivated and able graduate students who are
committed to becoming independent researchers. If you have, or are expecting to
graduate with a First or Upper Second Class degree (or equivalent), we would welcome
an application from you. We are also particularly interested in applications from
Masters students.
The School has a very stimulating, diverse, and cosmopolitan research community
within a large research-led University; around a third of our students are international
or from other countries within the EU.
